Which Way to Rome?
Welcome. What is Up? It certainly isn’t a major improvement from Roy Firestone, because watching Jim Rome daily on his ESPN show is like watching a chameleon change colors, or Eddy Haskell say whatever it takes to remain Wally’s coolest friend in the eyes of Mrs. Cleaver. On his “Here’s what I’m burning on,” openers, Rome continues to report after-the-fact, that he told us so.
After crushing us all last winter about how superior the NBA Western Conference was, what with nine teams vying for the playoffs, and a cakewalk awaiting the conference winner when it faced the East. That’s how Romie rolls, he likes to be on top and he talks a lot from that missionary position. Last year Kobe was the greatest player on earth and the Lakers were ready for any roadkill the East could send their way. Then along came the Celtics.
USC was Rome’s next soap box but that went away in the third game of the regular season in 2008 when they were dropped by Pac 10 powerhouse Oregon State. Having been burned too often he’s taken a new tact. For example, he devoted his 2000-09 NBA season to Kobe still being the “best player on earth” but he’s recently allowed LeBron James into his praises. Like a weathervane, Rome’s smack talk goes where the most wind is blowing and most of it is emanating out of his mouth. True dat, Romey.
