Cavalier Attitude Dooms LeBron’s Plan

lebronjamesFar too often, fueled by their “gloat when you win, ridicule when you lose” approach, the no-it-alls have excess “expertise” to spout, with very little accuracy. We like our sports experts to have insight, not “I told you so.” The hype gravitating to the obvious is the laziest route to go. So we were hit with large doses of LeBron James and Kobe Bryant while they neglected Orlando and Denver. ESPN even gave us Magic Johnson to critique the Lakers. Brad Daugherty was reportedly busy doing NASCAR.

Hence the case of Tony Kornheiser, when waiting for LeBron James and the Cavaliers to take their place commanding the playoffs after easily dispatching Detroit and Atlanta. Tony’s battle cry for most of May was: “fo-fo-fo,” for three four game sweeps to the inevitable high-res showdown of Kobe vs. LeBron for the NBA title. Kornheiser, of course, isn’t the only guilty party.

The Cavs spent plenty of time and money collecting players to support James and get him over the Eastern conference hump (Detroit/Boston) and into the league’s promised land. Along the way, those Cavs best learned how to celebrate their preliminary success, with on-bench mugging, pre-game skits and claims like Mo Williams’ “we’re the best team in the NBA.” Their were photo shoots, magazine covers and “the best remote report ever” according to Jim Rome, from tatted hip-hopper Delonte West. Time to throw some resin dust on that stuff.

King James and his court roll into Quicken Loans Arena down 3-1 to Orlando Thursday night, with the talk going quickly from their terrific regular season exploits, to a team again in need of bolstering the support around the league’s reigning MVP. Owner Dan Gilbert, even with his recent Chinese cash infusion, has again lost the key to the lock that had LeBron returning to Cleveland for life.

While the experts backtrack, taking newfound interest in the ability of the Orlando Magic and the Denver Nuggets, the NBA is quietly weeping the possible primetime showdown loss of Lebron-Kobe. Vitamin Water and Nike, with their Kingsnake ad campaigns are looking downright foolish.

The scrambling experts are looking for someone to blame. Better they had talked about Dwight Howard and Hedo Turkolu or Chauncey Billips and the talent of Carmelo Anthony a little before this. You would have thought that would have been as obvious as having Magic Johnson “part Laker owner and parttime freelance colorman” on ESPN’s panel to scold the Lakers when they lose and cheer when they win.

I have to agree with the Magic statement. There’s no way he should be there. All he does is analyze the Lakers. He’s not a good broadcaster and he constantly receives hall-of-fame acclaim. He has no insight and he thinks he does.

Rome thinks Delonte West is the coolest. Anyone who plays up to him on those segments gets his love. It’s not that good. West is kind of a punk. Not really the kind of guy you want to be frontin.’
It plays well in the dormroom, fraternity and blog basement where Rome aims.
